why we read recommendations

Every day we rely on the experiences of ours to guide our next decision. Where once we relied on the source a few trusted people, now using the Internet we rely on the collective wisdom of many.

We need recommendations, because of trust. Before we are willing to believe a source, we need to trust it. The effect of tapping into collective intelligence of online communities, can have an enormous impact on purchase decisions.

In a paper written by Prof. Clifford Nass, from the Department of Communication, Stanford University, he says:

“Recommendations have become a critical aspect of the human-computer interaction experience. With the overabundance of choices on ecommerce, entertainment, and informational websites, useful suggestions for 'where to go next' can dramatically increase user engagement and satisfaction.” 

The implication for online marketers is enormous – technology is making it possible to dynamic serve recommends to build trust faster than ever before.
